With Fendi‘s Fall 2024 collection, Kim Jones tries to bring together seemingly opposed elements of style: Italian refinement and British punk.
In the show notes, the designer explained that, as he prepared for his latest outing, he looked through the Fendi archives and found some sketches from the 1980s that “reminded me of London during that period: the Blitz Kids, the New Romantics, the adoption of workwear, aristocratic style, Japanese style. It was a point when British subcultures and styles became global and absorbed influences.”
The Fall 2024 collection marries the precise, polished technique of an Italian fashion house with a more relaxed, laissez-faire approach to styling. Intricate honeycomb- and intarsia-knit sweaters hang cooly off the body, like half-capes. Blouses draped along exposed shoulders almost feel like a modern take on Blitz club fashion. Elegant dresses are rendered in denim. As the collection notes read, it’s for the woman who’s “doing something rather than just being something.”
Jones also incorporates plenty of utilitarian features, as a tribute to the Fendi family. “When I first met [Artistic Director of Accessories and Menswear] Silvia Venturini Fendi, she was wearing a very chic utilitarian suit – almost a Safari suit. That fundamentally shaped my view of what Fendi is: It is how a woman dresses that has something substantial to do,” he recalled.
Following that theme, the palette is dominated by neutrals, with occasional pops of red and yellow. Stand-out accessories include cobalt tights, chunky tortoiseshell jewelry and a new satchel purse dubbed the “Simply”.
