Heron Preston keeps streetwear‘s flame of ingenuity ablaze with the help of a somewhat surprising materiality: medieval-style chainmail.
The designer returned to New York Fashion Week for his namesake brand’s first-ever show on Saturday. The Fall 2023 debut opened not with your typical models, but with a handful of men in neon construction uniforms, who painted lines for the runway like workers paint lanes on a street. The models emerged after, some wearing chainmail hoods (also known as mail coifs) with oversized leather moto jackets and fur-accented trench coats. Chainmail slip dresses and bralettes further add to the luxe, medieval flair.
Other highlights of the collection include sweatpants worn under miniskirts and basketball shorts with “Preston” printed across the butts (like “Pink” on Victoria’s Secret sweatpants), plus plenty of plenty of gloves and huge sunglasses to accessorize with. The Parsons alum and Virgil Abloh collaborator is known for taking inspiration from the streets (sometimes quite literally, as he did with the invitations for his Fall 2023 show). This collection reflects Preston’s curiosity for what streetwear can mean and represent.
