Great Outfits in Fashion History: Rihanna's Zac Posen LWD at the 2006 Billboard Music Awards

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

In honor of Rihanna‘s big comeback concert on Sunday — I believe some refer to it as the Super Bowl 57 Halftime Show — I thought it would be appropriate to revisit the artist and entrepreneur’s prolific style record with one of her firsts. In this case, I’m talking about her first Billboard Music Awards in 2006: Having released her second studio album that year, she attended the event and ended up taking home three trophies, wearing a designer she would go on to collaborate with many times over in the coming years.

Rihanna picked a pleated, plunging LWD by designer Zac Posen, with whom she had worked a few months prior on her looks for the Fashion Rocks concert at Radio City Music Hall. With its bouncy flared skirt and halter neckline, the dress was reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Some Like It Hot” ensemble — only updated and streamlined for a fashion icon in-the-making. Riri accessorized with statement earrings (very 2006), a big cocktail ring (again, 2006) and strappy gold metallic sandals. She wore her hair straight and long, then added a wash of color through rosy pink blush, a glossy cherry-red lip and matching nails.
