Great Outfits in Fashion History: Princess Diana's Perfectly Frilly Turtleneck

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

After a week filled with royals thanks to King Charles’ coronation, naturally, Princess Diana has been top of mind. While the festivities had their own fashionable moments, none of them managed to outdo her legendary style timeline.

Lady Diana Spencer was quite fashionable even prior to any royal engagements. On a 1981 visit to Broadlands in Romsey, Hampshire to meet members of the public, for instance, the then-20-year-old wore a colorful display to match the armfuls of flowers she would receive.

A green pleated skirt and belted jacket with blue detailing covered the soon-to-be superstar as she made her way through the crowds. But one piece in particular stole the show: a very frilly, bold turtleneck.

The off-white high-neck blouse made for a very majestic statement — the kind of majestic statement Diana would go on to make many times through her outfits before her passing.
