Great Outfits in Fashion History: Naomi Campbell in Black-and-White Alaïa

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

The old adage that we’re not on Naomi Campbell‘s level — and are never going to be on her level — is as harsh as it is true (even if a certain Jenner would disagree). I’m not solely speaking about her modeling, though she remains undefeated in the contest for most iconic runway walk. Like all the supermodels of her time, Campbell has a phenomenal off-the-runway fashion record, many a result of her close relationship to designers.

One of her most famous friendships was with Azzedine Alaïa, who she affectionately called Papa. He’s behind countless Naomi Campbell Great Outfits, but among my favorites is the black-and-white striped dress from Alaïa‘s Spring 1996 collection she wore to her fragrance and body-care launch event in 2000. It featured a halter-neck bodice with peekaboo black lace at the bust and at the hem of the mermaid skirt.

She opted for equally bold glam consisting of cherry-pink eyeshadow, dark eyeliner, deep red blush and dark red-lined lips, framed by her wavy lob.
