Great Outfits in Fashion History: Lil' Kim at the Last Chanel Met Gala

She wore Marc Jacobs — and her dress ended up in the museum.

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

Lil’ Kim has had some memorable Chanel moments over the years, but when it came to the 2005 Met Gala honoring the fashion house, she worked with a different designer: Marc Jacobs, who’s become one of her go-tos.

“I love every time I go with Marc, hands down,” she told Vogue in a 2020 interview reflecting on her best Met Gala looks. “Marc is so young and fun. He and Char [Defrancesco] are my husbands. We would be out laughing at stuff that wasn’t even part of the event, just kids having a good time.”

Jacobs created a strapless velvet gown for the rapper in a bold shade of magenta, with a rosette tied with a black ribbon cascading down the front. This look isn’t just a Great Outfit — it also turned into a full-circle sartorial moment: As Lil’ Kim explained to Janelle Okwodu, “that dress and that picture ended up in the museum. That was the reward for our night being so glamorous, memorable, and fun.”

Obviously, with the first Monday in May honoring the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld in 2023, it feels appropriate to revisit the last time the Met Gala recognized Chanel. (Though, the latest exhibit will also span the designer’s work at Fendi, Chloé, Balmain and his namesake label.) In addition to being a highlight of that evening, Lil Kim’s look is also very of-the-moment, from the “Barbie” film-ready shade of pink to the runway-approved rosette detail.
