There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
‘Tis the season for curling up with a peppermint hot cocoa and watching Kate Winslet exemplify my all-time favorite character trope (and my chosen aesthetic) — frazzled English woman — in the Nancy Meyers Christmastime classic, “The Holiday.” But before she landed a permanent spot on my winter watch list (and cold-weather Pinterest board) as charming columnist Iris, her portrayal of “Titanic“‘s Edwardian-era bombshell Rose stole my heart. Yes, that film reigns supreme among romance fans, but Winslet’s off-screen style circa “Titanic”‘s award-season sweep is just as sartorially significant.
While attending the 70th Academy Awards in 1998 (where the James Cameron-directed tear-jerker received 14 nominations and 11 wins), Winslet donned an emerald-green Givenchy gown designed by then-Chief Designer Alexander McQueen. The floor-length dress featured golden embroidery across the bodice, with the skirt sporting a dragonfly motif and vine-like design cascading into a flowing train. The intricate embroidery also streamed into the gown’s matching collared shrug, which continued the style across its back and down its sleeves.
Completing the ensemble, Winslet wore matching pointed-toe pumps that mirrored the gown’s emerald shade and vine accent. As for her accessories, the actor added drop earrings and a sparkling silver pendant necklace (not to be confused with the Heart of the Ocean).
For Winslet’s Oscars-ready beauty look, she tapped classic makeup staples: a mauve-y lip color, shimmering eye shadow and a thin ’90s brow. Echoing Rose’s flowing red tresses, Winslet styled her strawberry blonde hair into soft curls with a voluminous side part.
