Great Outfits in Fashion History: Cher's 1988 Bob Mackie Oscars Gown

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

Here at Fashionista, we don’t use the term “icon” lightly, but we know Cher is well worthy of the title. From her impeccable wardrobe to her era-defining music and film roles, and her fanbase that spans generations, she doesn’t have many rivals. Since her Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show performance and Zendaya‘s recent recreation of one of her Bob Mackie looks, Cher has been top-of-mind.

The strappy champaign gown to which Zendaya paid homage is undeniably stunning, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Cher looks that are worthy of revisiting.

On April 11, 1988, the actress and singer attended the 60th Annual Academy Awards in another shimmering Bob Mackie look (one of many that she and the designer created throughout their 50-year collaboration).

The black sheer gown featured rhinestone fringe at the bust and down the skirt, complemented by the matching stole, earrings and a headpiece.

This Academy Awards appearance came two years after Cher wore her renowned revenge dress to the ceremony in 1986, reportedly in reaction to not being nominated that year for “Mask.” However, in 1988, Cher was not only nominated, but she also took home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Moonstruck.”
