There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

One of the most defining memories of my childhood was watching the 1980 episode of “The Muppet Show” featuring the “Queen of Comedy,” Carol Burnett. The combination of her ferociously funny jokes and her fabulously wacky costumes on the show (Lonely Asparagus, anyone?) instantly had me hooked. From that point on, I became enamored with not just her work, but also the many Bob Mackie-designed outfits she wore on her eponymous variety show and every vibrant red carpet look she’s pulled throughout her career.

Never one to shy away from color, Burnett can often be seen wearing a bright ensemble that perfectly embodies her punchy and vibrant persona. One of my favorite examples occurred during a press conference to promote a live performance of Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite” in 1971: For the occasion, Burnett chose a cherry-red patent leather trench coat, which she layered over a simple white T-shirt, blue velvet shorts, sheer black tights and shiny black knee-high boots.

The styling of Burnett’s glossy outerwear helped the then-38-year-old to stick out among her male peers’ comparatively drab gray and tan attire.
