There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
Brooke Shields is the true definition of an American sweetheart. Beginning her career by modeling at just 11 months old, Shields has been featured across the pages of Vogue, starred in a range of films, posed in iconic Calvin Klein ads and played muse for brands like Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino.
Her off-duty style was equally attention-grabbing; known for sporting collegiate button-downs, jeans and loafers, Shields was the blueprint for that classic ’80s look. Meanwhile, her party outfits were a bit more daring. Shields made bold sartorial statements from diamond headdresses to flamboyant organza gowns back in the day.
In anticipation of the upcoming documentary on Shields’ life, “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” we look back at one of her most iconic looks.
In the above photograph, Shields attends the “High Lights: The Mountains in Photography, 1840 to the Present” opening night photo exhibition at the International Centre for Photography in New York City in 1983. For those who don’t know, Shields was deeply involved in New York’s art scene, and in her Studio 54 days, she was a muse to photographers and artists like Andy Warhol. (According to The New York Times, one of her Keith Harings is inscribed, “For Brooke … one of the sweetest (honestly) people I’ve met, with lots of love and respect.”)
Shields looked glamorous in an oversized fluffy pink jacket and a white beaded dress at the photo gallery’s vernissage. She kept her accessories simple with a small silver clutch, a matching silver ring and a diamond stud earring. Shields styled her hair in her signature voluminous, bouncy curls, characteristic of the ’80s. Her pink blush matched the shade of her jacket.
