Great Outfits in Fashion History: Brandy's 1998 Embroidered Floral Gown

Given that I regularly find myself humming “Impossible” from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella,” you could say Brandy lives in my head rent-free. (Spotify, consider this my pitch to finally upload the soundtrack to streaming.) Along with the Grammy-winning artist’s vocals echoing through my mind, her decade-defining ’90s style also occupies a good amount of my brain space.

Before the then-19-year-old changed into a ball gown fit for a princess to perform “The Sweetest Sounds” at the 1998 Emmys, Brandy stunned on the red carpet in an enchanting chocolate brown dress embroidered with floral detailing. Black mesh fabric sprinkled with embroidered flowers and vines overlaid the gown’s silky material and gathered in a cowl neckline.

She kept her accessories to a minimum, with only open-toe black sandals, a single ear cuff and a round silver watch. (After all, Cinderella has to make it to the ball on time.) Brandy styled her signature braids into a half-up half-down ‘do, and embraced all the ’90s makeup codes: thin brows, a gradient berry-colored lip and a smokey eye with a hint of black liner.
