Great Outfits in Fashion History: Anna Wintour's Sparkly 1990 Marc Jacobs Dress

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

Vogue recently unveiled its December issue, with Marc Jacobs as the American title’s first-ever guest editor. The designer worked alongside Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour on the issue, set to hit newsstands on Nov. 26.

Jacobs is a longtime friend of Wintour’s and their relationship goes back years. And while the Wintour who invited Jacobs to co-edit her beloved magazine has an affinity for printed maxis and knee-high boots, she donned her fair share of eye-catching sparkles and short hemlines back in the 1980s and ’90s — including a memorable look Jacobs himself designed.

On Aug. 8, 1990, to celebrate the book “Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up” by Bob Colacello, Wintour styled a Jacobs-designed shimmering, spaghetti-strap dress with a black handbag, dainty watch and chunky beaded necklace similar to those she still wears. The glimmering mini feels just as relevant in 2024 — even if modern-day Wintour is unlikely to wear it now herself.

The glittery look makes an excellent blueprint for bold nighttime dressers and holiday partygoers aiming for an editor-approved getup. Want to try Wintour’s look for yourself? Shop our inspired picks below.
