Diesel shamelessly wants you thinking about sex, again. Last season, invitations to the Italian brand’s Milan Fashion Week show were literal butt plugs. For Fall 2023, a leaning tower of more than 200,000 Diesel-branded Durex condoms took center stage. Still, it’s the clothes by Glenn Martens that get people really excited.
The latest collection takes distressed, devoré and dégradé denim looks to a new level. Knees aren’t just ripped: Some styles give the illusion of evaporating off the body, while others look as though they’re barely holding themselves together. Same with skirts that appear to be mid-fall, as if held up only by a silver waist chain, and the deconstructed jellyfish-like hems on dresses.
Puffy and oversized coats give the body an inflated look. Some jackets feature exaggeratedly high shoulders, others seem to be covered in resin, judging from their stiff but glossy texture. The Diesel logo is seen throughout, but not in ways that feel too forced — rather, we see it in letter bangles, on graphic tees and as the hardware on handbags and jewelry.
Other highlights from Fall 2023: Moto jackets and mini skirts with open-mouth smiles printed on, on-trend maxis, glitter-paneled cutouts on denim dresses that give a delightful iridescence. There’s a full, skin-tight suit made of dull leather, not latex, as well as a flowy black gown that Morticia Addams would stun in. Reflective sunglasses are the coolest new way to block haters.
Just a handful of years ago, Diesel was facing a bleak future. But the brand’s revival under Martens has tapped into something special through an edgy and youthful aesthetic, collaborations and dates (or pseudo-campaigns) with fashion mavens. Now, Diesel isn’t afraid to distress its jeans, stir discomfort or do anything, really.
