There’s no doubt the clothes in Coperni‘s Fall 2024 collection, just presented at Paris Fashion Week, are subversively fun. The onesie jackets, sheer dresses and dip-dyed furs embody designers Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant’s well-honed Coperni-cool. But the brand’s handbags — which have found viral success and dominated street style in recent years — are once again the story, thanks to the new “Air Swipe Bag,” first revealed on social media ahead of Monday’s runway show.

The “99% air [and] 1% glass” handbag looks like a phantom object thanks to its translucence and pale bluish hue. It is constructed out of NASA’s nanomaterial silica aerogel, which the organization practically uses to capture stardust. As airy and fragile as it looks, the material can apparently withstand extreme heat and pressure thousands of times its weight. (Still, it comes in a highly padded, hard-shell case.) Dr. Ioannis Michaloudis (who is also a professor) helped develop it in Coperni’s signature curved bag silhouette.

Whether this bag will be produced and sold, or solely exists for us to marvel at online, remains to be seen. There were other curious (and seemingly much more accessible) accessories seen on the runway, including handbags that look like a gallon-sized Ziplocs and futuristic star-shaped footwear.

Coperni has been nailing its social media strategy through a succession of viral moments across the last couple years, from Bella Hadid’s spray-on dress, to last season’s CD-player bag, to, outside of fashion week, looks for Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” tour. The Air Swipe Bag, in all its material innovation, is just the latest.
