Coach Just Introduced so Many New Bags, Models Carried 2 at a Time

RIP our shoulders next fall.

Following its dreamlike showcase back in September, Coach reiterated its love for American fashion at Monday’s Fall 2023 debut, with Stuart Vevers transforming much of the house’s beloved classic styles with a more youthful interpretation.

Inspired by Gen Z, Vevers presented several refreshing outerwear silhouettes, many of them made from pre-loved fabrics that are perfect for bundling up in, like colorful metallic shearling coats and oversized leather jackets. Denim staples get a makeover via shredding techniques, with skirts hitting the on-trend (and fall-appropriate) maxi length. Vevers’ version of “Americana” also bleeds romance this season, seen in flowy chiffon gowns adorned with ruffled rattail trains as finishing touches.

But arguably the biggest news from the show concerned handbags, which Vevers quite literally doubled down on: The designer (and his styling team) tasked models with carrying multiple bags at once, layering everything from ultra-large totes to teeny-tiny minis and monogram backpacks on top of one another. (One purse is simply not enough anymore!) The house also introduced a new collection of playful handbag designs called Coach Shapes, including purses resembling lips, apples, hearts, stars and even a dog bone.

“We did have lots of double bags,” Vevers told Fashionista after the show. “The first idea we actually had started with Coach’s novel shapes, like those big totes. We wanted almost the most simple version of a Coach bag – just two pieces stitched together with a simple handle and made from natural, vegetable-tanned leather.”

The stacked bag look was all about showcasing these abundant new styles in a playful way.

“The heart bag had been doing super well for us, and so I was like, ‘Should we try like other shapes? Should we push this further?,’ Vevers said. “It ended up being such a joyful exercise because we really tried so many things and a lot of it ended up in the collection.”

Ultimately, Coach Fall 2023 is about rediscovering the brand’s legacy through the lens of the next generation: “That’s really my passion. As a designer, I’ve always been fascinated by the next generation. It’s my inspiration right now.”
