Close Out the Summer of Country Club Fashion With a New Polo Shirt

Preppy dressing is here to stay.

Since re-entering the runway scene with a rugby-like vengeance during the Spring 2019 season, prep has continued to shed its buttoned-up image in fashion — trickling down from the halls of boarding schools to the manicured courts of elite country clubs. This summer in particular, the style spent less time reading Homer in layered cardigans and more time playing doubles in pleated mini skirts; the look has become more attainable for the common fashion folk who want a slice of whatever the upper crusts of society are enjoying.

The democratization of preppy dress has given us the ability to put on an outfit worthy of a New York Yacht Club membership to play tennis at a public court in the park. Having a stable in Connecticut and trust funds are no longer prerequisites for owning a polo shirt, which is why the humble, collared top has received a lot of attention as of late. It now comes in many different forms, from subtly seductive cropped versions to cuddly terry and knit ones. There’s a style to meet grandma for afternoon tea in, one to play Pickleball with the pals in, another style to happy hour in and, of course, an option for rich mom things, like taking long walks in the middle of the work day. Meet your collared match, below.

Mango Openwork Knit Polo, $60, available here (sizes XS-XL).
