Ridiculously Pretty!

Barn Jackets Are The Practical Fall Trend That Will Stand the Test of Time

Not too long ago, even the most extravagant dressers were embracing gorp-core, the unflashy trend that fused utility with minimalism. Now, the essence of that utilitarian aesthetic continues to resonate, particularly with the rise of a workwear staple: the barn jacket.

True to its name, a barn or field jacket is traditionally meant for getting dirty (say, working in stables or gardens) and is functional above all else. They tend to be crafted from durable textiles — like waxed canvas, gabardine or quilted shell — to keep you protected against the elements, often in a boxy silhouette, with functional details like thermal linings and spacious pockets (great for mittens and tissues for winter). Collars and cuffs are often made of corduroy or sherpa for a stylish texture contrast that appeals to many of us, regardless of whether we plan to ever set foot on a farm.

Last year, Loewe co-signed barn jackets in its Spring 2023 collection, while Prada embraced them on its Spring 2024 runway with oversized, distressed canvas coats in varying neutral hues. These collections seem to have inspired other brands to produce their own takes on the style, and shoppers to hunt them out.

According to the shopping platform LTK, searches for barn jackets have skyrocketed by 1,000% (that’s ten fold) in the past three months, signaling a buzzy trend that’s hard to ignore. But even though it’s having a moment, the barn jacket has stood the test of time as one of the oldest pieces of outerwear — meaning you won’t have buyer’s remorse a few trend cycles from now.

Whether layered over a casual sweater or paired with a going-out dress for a high-low mix, the barn jacket is the perfect blend of style and substance, ready to round out your outerwear rotation this season. Shop our favorites below.
