9 Designer Items You Need for Spring, According to a Nordstrom Buyer

Be prepared with a statement piece or two as things start to open up.

There’s definitely something in the air these days. We’re not sure if it’s just spring, the promise of a wild few months as we’re able to leave our homes, or a combination thereof, but whatever it is, it’s giving us all a case of the shoppies. And to help us navigate the now-unfamiliar waters of going-out clothes, we turned to Nordstrom’s Women’s Designer RTW Buyer, Jared Morrison.

As we transition from pajamas and sweats into more traditionally public-facing garments, Morrison suggests a few spring trends to keep in mind:

“Boudoir to Street” comprises “lace, chiffon and sheer pieces, especially bralettes and cropped styles,” as seen at Balmain, Rick Owens and Versace.

“Nomad Effect” includes the use of “texture, crochet techniques and earth tones” as seen at Chloé, Gabriela Hearst and Max Mara.

“Under the Sea” includes “joyful prints and direct references to an underwater utopia” as seen at Burberry, Etro and Versace.

Romantic Volumes” refers to “exaggerated shoulders and ruffle details” as seen at Carolina Herrera, Gabriela Hearst and Valentino.

Finally, there’s “Electric and Candy Pop Colors” including bright hues and metallics, as seen at Dries van Noten, Isabel Marant and Stella McCartney.

“As we transition back to normalcy, I feel many want to rebuild their closets for the new journey ahead,” says Morrison. “Having transitional clothing that can be edgy, exude confidence and easily styled from day to night will be key.” To help us through that transition, Morrison picked nine of his favorite items for spring, from a surprisingly romantic Burberry hoodie, to a one-shoulder Isabel Marant party dress that Morrison says is “perfect for a vaccination selfie.”

“These items touch on all the major trends for SS21 and are versatile pieces that can ladder back to ones wardrobe,” Morrison adds. Shop them all in the gallery below.

“I heart this Burberry cable knit sweater with contoured cutouts infused with lace. This romantic new addition would be perfect cozied up at home or dressed up for date night.” Burberry Cable Lace Reconstructed Sweater, $1,450, available here.
