33 Chic, Oversized Handbags to Channel Your Inner Mary Poppins

We’ll call them *appropriately* capacious.

Fashion and TV fans alike were overcome with thoughts of large handbags after Tom Wambsgans delivered a sickeningly accurate — and briefly inescapable — line during the season four premiere of “Succession.” (You know the one.)

The insult isn’t the only thing that went viral. Following the episode, searches for the now-infamous Burberry bag in question — “Burberry tote bag,” to be exact — jumped up 310%, according to Klarna. The company also found that, in the week or so after the “Succession” premiere, purchases of “oversized bags” increased 87%, while “large tote bag” purchases increased 26%.

The HBO series may have had an impact, but there are larger forces at play here: Oversized, multi-functional pieces are having a moment.

Whether knowingly or not, the viral scene facetiously supports the impending return of oversized purses for daily use, which started bubbling up on the Spring 2023 runways. Recently, Marc Jacobs reprised its iconic Stam bag 18 years after its Fall 2005 debut. Daniel Lee’s first installment as chief creative officer at Burberry was riddled with generously sized saddles and satchels. Loewe sent truly gargantuan purses down its Fall 2023 runway.

Now’s a good time to invest in an appropriately capacious bag. There doesn’t have to be anything “ludicrous” about it.

For a quiet luxury look that the Roy family would approve of, forego prints and patterns by turning to a solid color for daily use. Woven textures à la Bottega Veneta and quilted leather from Saint Laurent, Chanel and Marc Jacobs are also leading the oversized trend. Other notable mentions include Brandon Blackwood’s latest Everyday Tote and new colorways of Telfar’s shearling-trimmed shopping bag, in collaboration with Ugg.
